Our digital cameras test covers everything from the best cheap cameras for beginners all the way up to high-end models for serious enthusiasts and semi-professionals. We look at cameras from Canon, Nikon, Fujifilm, Sony, Panasonic and other major brands, including compact, rugged, mirrorless and SLR models.

Our test results will show you:

  • which cameras take the best pictures
  • which cameras are best for making movies
  • which cameras are the easiest to use
  • which cameras are suitable for beginners, enthusiasts and professionals
  • which cameras are the best, and cheapest, around.

While we recommend models with a CHOICE Expert Rating of 80% or more, models that score 70–79% are also worth considering if the price is right.

We've partnered with Shop Ethical on this update to show the ratings the Ethical Consumer Group give to each company.

Shopping links on the CHOICE website

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

Note that retailers and manufacturers regularly change the lenses that come in camera kits, and some camera bodies are sold on their own with lenses sold separately.

Our interactive comparison tool helps you find out which digital cameras are dust- and water-resistant, and which have time lapse and panorama settings. We also test in automatic and manual modes, so you can look into which models are best if you want to move into advanced photography. Our Recommended list will help you find the best cameras from all the major brands.
