Electric shavers offer a convenient alternative to shaving with a razor. With two types to choose from – foil (with oscillating blades) and rotary (with rotating heads) – and many features to boot, they're a popular alternative to the classic blade.

Our expert tester conducted in-house testing in the CHOICE labs. We also put each shaver through a user trial to determine how easy they are to use. Our results can tell you which shavers:

  • are the easiest to use
  • leave your skin feeling the best after shaving
  • have the longest battery life and shortest charge time.

We've also partnered with Shop Ethical on this update to show the ratings the Ethical Consumer Group gives to each company.

Shopping links on the CHOICE website

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

    Blade type

Foil shavers use oscillating blades under a perforated foil to cut the hair and are available with single, dual or multiple foil heads. Rotary shavers use two or three circular rotating heads to lift and cut the hair. We haven't found a difference in ease of use or performance, based on blade type.
