Our experts conduct a number of performance tests on standard, personal and high performance blenders from brands including Ninja, Nutribullet, Vitamix and Breville to work out which are best at blending a range of ingredients and which are easiest to operate and clean. This includes:

  • how evenly the machine blends a soft food
  • the blender's ability to crush ice
  • how well the blender processes a tough leafy green vegetable like kale
  • a standard blender's ability to chop carrots in a uniform manner
  • how well a personal blender processes fruit and vegetables to make a smoothie
  • how well a super (or high performance) blender makes nut butter and sorbet.

We've also partnered with Shop Ethical on this update to show the ratings the Ethical Consumer Group gives to each company.

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

We test the latest blenders to help you find the best all-round performer for your needs, whether it's a personal blender like a Nutribullet or Ninja, a high performance "super" blender from Vitamix or Breville, or a standard low-to mid-priced blender from Kmart or Sunbeam.

For high performance blenders, we also test the following functions if the model claims to be able to perform them:

  • blending and heating a raw vegetable soup
  • making pizza dough
  • dry milling nuts
  • shredding parmesan cheese.

Scores are comparable according to type: a high-powered blender capable of making nut butters and soups from raw ingredients will be tested differently to a blender designed for just the basics. Our interactive comparison tool helps you find out which brands are quieter and which are best at performing tough tasks like blending leafy vegetables. Our Recommended list will show you at a glance which models come out on top.

Standard blenders are cheaper; core functions are to blend soups and smoothies and crush ice. High-performance blenders are more powerful and can cost over $1000; suitable for nut butters, sorbets and making hot soups from raw ingredients using friction. To be classified as a high-performance blender it must be at least 1200W and come with a tamper. Personal blenders are ideal for single-serve smoothies and can come with chopping attachments. Scores are only comparable by type.

      Performance score

      Expand to view more details.

Overall performance is based on how each type of blender performs its core tasks. All are tested for blending a soft food, crushing ice and blending kale. Extra tests include: chopping carrots for standard blenders and green smoothie for personal blenders. High-performance blenders are tested on both of these, plus nut butter and sorbet.
