Lawn edgers are a useful tool if you value neat, clean edges along your paths and garden beds. They lock into line and don't wobble much, so they leave a cleaner, more professional separation between path and lawn than a lawn trimmer or lawnmower can.

Our expert testers put electric, petrol and battery lawn edgers to the test in a real-world setting to determine which models:

  • are the best for edging along concrete kerbs and soft paths (hard and soft edges)
  • are the easiest to manoeuvre on grass and hold a line well.

Shopping links on the CHOICE website

CHOICE is an independent, nonprofit organisation dedicated to helping consumers. Clicking a link will take you to a retailer's website to shop. While we make money if you buy through some retailer links, this doesn't influence any of our rankings. 100% of the money we make goes straight back into our nonprofit mission. We're currently testing this service and will consider providing more shopping links in the future. Tell us what you think.

Lawn edgers may be ideal for their specific task, but you need to decide whether they're really worth the bother or if you'd be just as happy with the job done by a whipper snipper, which can also carry out other general gardening jobs around the yard.

We test lawn edgers only every few years, as these products tend to stay on the market for a long time. Scores for models tested in different years should be broadly in line with each other, but aren't directly comparable as the testing conditions and sites can change.
